WSOP 2006
The World Series of Poker event 2006 sure was a lot of fun! And to think of how the whole WSOP started off so modestly with a mere two players! It’s quite amazing to see it now and the World Series of Poker event 2006 sure makes it tempting to join this year’s one, in 2007.
It was Jamie Gold who ultimately won the World Series of Poker event 2006. It sure looked like he was having fun playing his poker games, even though stress levels must have been high with those obscenely high payouts on the line. But Gold must have really known what he was doing and had some great bluffing methods, because the legend successfully knocked out 7 out of 8 of his opponents! It wasn’t easy winning the WSOP 2006 champion title, but Gold did it and he sure deserved what he got. It is pretty unlikely that he will ever forget the night of August 11, 2006.
One could say that Gold just got lucky as his poker cards were nice to him. But anyone who knows anything about poker playing understands that the game is more than luck. True, good cards come in to play (excuse the pun!) in a game like poker, but there are so many other skills and a calm player’s attitude that is needed just as much.
At some point it looked like Gold was going to lose the World Series of Poker event 2006 though. So how did he manage to handle things when it looked like everything was to slip from his fingers? Well, according to Gold, he just “didn’t focus on it.” Instead, he looked at things in compartments rather than the whole big picture which must have really helped him (as he ultimately won) – he simply focused on the game at hand and his opponents at the poker table. This is indeed quite a lesson for life. When you have something you really want but it seems completely unattainable, take a leaf out of Gold’s book – don’t focus on the big picture at hand; instead, split it up into manageable parts that you are dealing with at the time. By ignoring the tournament, the big money, the entire World Series of Poker event 2006 and focusing solely on the task at hand, Gold was able to come back into play and ultimately become the 2006 WSOP champion – what a feat indeed.
It is not surprising when reading an interview with Gold on how he felt about winning the World Series of Poker event 2006 that he has such a positive energy. He is positive about life and very grateful for what he has – indeed another life lesson. Winning a game – especially when it comes to sports and gambling – is about so much more than luck of the draw, cards, dice or skills. These factors of course are involved, but one’s attitude to the game and the other players – and indeed life itself – has just a significant contributing element.
And that is probably one of the reasons why Gold’s fans love him so much. The World Series of Poker event 2006 was about so much more than what poker tournaments were played and the skills of the players involved – it was about how the players acted and how that contributed to their game. Let’s hope that this lesson is carried over to the WSOP of 2007 and that our players are just as positive and inspirational as the World Series of Poker event 2006 champion Jamie Gold.
